INTERNATIONAL REPORTS

The Cayman Islands Government has considered a range of solid waste management solutions, predominantly focused on remediation, landfill mining and Waste to Energy. In this section, international reports on best practice related to all these options have been compiled, using landfills and jurisdictions most relevant to the Cayman Islands.

REMEDIATION REPORTS

Remediation of a landfill or dump means to make it safe for people and the environment.  Remediation often involves capping the site, managing storm water, leachate and landfill gas, and performing a long-term care and monitoring programme. There are many examples of remediated landfill sites, lined and unlined, that are now used for other activities.  Usually the land is best employed for green space activities since it is difficult to build on.  This type of land use also provides for continued access for monitoring and maintenance.  Common post-closure land uses include parks, golf courses, playing fields and biking trails.
